History of FUJIFILM Corporation

The Fuji Photo Film Co. Ltd was founded in January 1934 with the view to manufacturing photo film domestically. Within one month, operations commenced at the Ashigara Factory for the production of photographic film, printing paper, dryplate, and other photographic sensitive material.

However, the business grew steadily in a range of directions as a result of its continuous innovative technical advancements. In fact, FUJIFILM now has a long history of imaging and information "firsts".

The following provides a snapshot of some of FUJIFILM's innovations:

  • The company twice produced the world's fastest colour print still film, an accomplishment it also achieved with colour motion picture film.
  • FUJIFILM also introduced the world's first single use camera known as the QuickSnap, as well as the world's first 35mm single use camera with a built-in flash.
  • The first digital camera was developed by FUJIFILM.
  • FUJIFILM also developed the exclusive solid state laser technology found in its Frontier Digital Minilabs and commercial digital printers, such as the Pictrography system.
  • FUJIFILM's outstanding technological advances have resulted in numerous citations and awards, including an Academy Award (the "Oscar") in Technical Merit for the creation of the world's fastest colour motion picture negative film and an Emmy Award for Technical Merit for its developments in metal particle tape technology.

Today, with more than 75,000 employees worldwide working in Fuji owned subsidiaries, FUJIFILM Corporation continues to be a leading technology imaging innovator providing high quality products and service that meets the critical standards demanded by consumers, retailers and professionals.
